How do writers make any money?

Published by jen925844 at 10:32 am under 1 Edit This

I am not a professional writer by any means.  I do technical writing and write on my own personal blogs, but have always wondered how do writers make any money?  Some people absolutely hate writing and would never venture out of their comfort zone to even write a blog, but for those of us where writing does not bother us and comes naturally…could there be a chance we could write as a career?  After all, what a good way to make some extra money.  You can take your laptop anywere and write at any hour of the day.  I know professional writers make their money writing articles and books, but what about some of those freelance sites?  I have read some things on some different message boards and it seems it can be a little hit and miss.  You write a small 300 word article for $4 and you end up doing several rewrites for it…so is it really worth that $4?  Probably not.  I have personally written a few items for eHow, but have not seen any money as of yet from my articles.  I have read numerous things about how you can make some extra cash from eHow, but I obviously do not know the ins and outs of it just yet.  Last year I was hired by a writing company to write a set number of articles for eHow in which I had to pick topics from a set list and would be paid $10 per article.  At the time I felt their list of topics was not feasible for me and I never ended up doing the job.  Thinking back, I really should have.  That company is probably making loads of money right now off the residual income generated from all those articles people wrote for them!  One of my tasks this week is to look more into the writng thing and see if I can find some sites that actually pay well for writers!

One of my co-workers makes a decent amount of money writing for DemandStudios.com and AssociatedContent.com. Part of the trick, I think, is learning to write with Google optimized search words in mind. It really seems to be a combination of writing easily, quickly, well, with keywords, and for the right sites.

Welcome to today.com and good luck. :)

I hear that you can sell your articles for decent prices at Constant Content, but you might have to wait for the buyer for a long time.
